Richmond Falls to Dayton In A-10 Women's Soccer Championship

KINGSTON, R.I. --- The University of Richmond women's soccer team (10-8-1) dropped a 2-1 decision to Dayton University in the finals of the 2001 Verizon Atlantic 10 women's soccer championships on Sunday afternoon at the URI Soccer Complex.
Richmond jumped on the scoreboard early when sophomore Edda Gardarsdottir (Reykjavik,Iceland/Briedholt) played a cross in the box to junior Jenna Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) who slipped in into the net to the give the Spiders a 1-0 lead in the third minute of the contest. Dayton tied the game at 1-1 when freshman Tesia Kozlowski took a pass from senior Megan McKnight at the top of the box and buried the shot into the upper right corner of the net. The Flyers notched the game-winning goal when Bridget Bushman headed in a corner kick in the 36th minute. Dayton out shot Richmond 14-1 in the first half.
Richmond senior goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) turned away eight shots in the contest. Samuhel along with sophomore Molly Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) was selected to the All-Championship team.
