2001 Football Individual Review
The Spiders finished the 2001 football season at 3-8 overall, 3-6 in Atlantic 10 action. There were many individual and team triumphs along the way. The Spiders rush offense ranked eighth nationally, while it rush defense ranked seventh. Richmond's scoring defense finished 13th in the nation, while its total defense was 11th. The following is an individualized look at the 2001 Richmond Spiders:
#1 J.R. Purnell ... The senior running back played in all 11 games, starting six ... ranked third on the team with 450 rushing yards ... averaged 40.9 yards per game ... scored four rushing touchdowns ... Spiders were 3-0 when Purnell scored a rushing touchdown ... averaged 4.3 yards/carry ... ran for a season-high 76 yards on 15 carries at UMass (Nov. 23) ... scored two touchdowns against the Minutemen ... ran for 70 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown against Rhode Island (Oct. 25).
#2 Rashad Smith ... The sophomore defensive back played in seven games ... made 12 tackles (10 solo) ... had two pass break ups ... tied a season a season-high with three tackles at Vanderbilt (Sept. 22) and against Villanova (Sept. 29) ... both breakups came against the Wildcats.
#3 Ryan Tolhurst ... The senior wide receiver played in three games ... missed majority of season with leg and Achilles injuries ... made seven catches for 140 yards ... averaged a team-high 46.7 receiving yards per game ... had six catches for 117 yards at Virginia (Sept. 1).
#4 Chad Blackstock ... The senior safety started all 11 games ... ranked fifth on the team with 66 tackles (42 solo) ... led team with four interceptions ... had five pass breakups and two tackles for loss ... recorded double-digit tackles three times ... led team and made season-high 12 stops at Vanderbilt (Sept. 22) ... made nine unassisted tackles at Virginia (Sept. 1) ... had two interceptions, returning one a team season-best 32 yards, at UMass (Nov. 23).
#5 Jason Houston ... The sophomore tight end played in eight games ... majority of time was on special teams ... made three tackles ... had season-high two stops against Hofstra (Nov. 3).
#6 Claude Diggs ... The junior fullback played in all 11 games, making three starts ... ranked fourth on the team with 326 rushing yards ... averaged 4.3 yards/carry ... scored lone touchdown of the season at Virginia (Sept. 1) ... ran for a season-high 69 yards on a season-high 13 attempts against Rhode Island (Oct. 25) ... season-long 33-yard rush against the Rams.
#7 Adrian Archie ... The junior linebacker played in all 11 games, making 10 starts ... led team and ranked 14th in the Atlantic 10 with 89 tackles ... tied for team lead with 52 solo tackles ... made seven tackles for loss and two sacks ... had four quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery ... recorded four double-digit tackles games ... led team in tackles three times ... tied season-high with 14 tackles at Maine (Oct. 6) and at Northeastern (Oct. 20) ... made 12 tackles, two for loss, and recovered a fumble at Delaware (Nov. 10) ... had a tackle for loss in each of the first three games.
#8 Clement Johnson ... The freshman defensive back played in 10 games ... made 15 tackles (12 solo) ... made one interception against Hofstra ... made a season-high four stops, all solo, at UMass (Nov. 23) ... made three stops against Hofstra.
#9 Cordell Roane ... The junior played in all 11 games ... started five games at quarterback and also saw time as running back, wide-out, kick return and punt return ... led team with 719 rushing yards ... averaged 65.4 yards/game ... also led team with 1,073 yards of total offense and 1,110 all-purpose yards ... averaged 4.4 yards/carry and tallied a team-high 162 attempts ... scored three rushing touchdowns and threw for three others ... entered the record books with a superman performance against Hofstra (Nov. 3) ... now ranks second on Richmond's all-time single-game list with 246 rushing yards and is tied for second with 402 total yards against the Pride ... carried 37 times, tied for sixth all-time ... also threw for 156 yards, a touchdown and ran for two scores ... earned Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his performance ... also eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark at James Madison (128) and against Rhode Island (111) ... made six catches for 55 yards against Villanova (Sept. 29).
#10 Jason Hill ... The senior cornerback started all 11 games ... ranked eighth on the team with 38 tackles (28 solo) ... led team and ranked second in the Atlantic 10 Conference with 11 pass break ups ... made two interceptions and one tackle for loss ... made first interception of season at Maine (Oct. 6) and then made another in next game, at James Madison (Oct. 13) ...tied for 11th on Richmond's all-time interceptions list with eight career picks ... made season-high nine tackles (seven solo) at Virginia (Sept. 1).
#11 Fred Hanes ... The senior defensive lineman played in all 11 games, making one start (at Delaware) ... made 27 tackles (16 solo) ... had four tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and four quarterback hurries ... made season-high six tackles at Northeastern (Oct. 20) ... made five stops, two for loss, against Hofstra (Nov. 3) ... made three tackles and one sack in collegiate finale, at UMass (Nov. 23).
#12 D'Arcy Wills ... The senior quarterback played in two games ... missed final nine games after separating shoulder at Vanderbilt (Sept. 22) ... ran for 78 yards and passed for 92 yards ... ran for 48 yards on 11 carries at Virginia (Sept. 1) ... threw for 76 yards on a 5-of-12 passing against the Cavaliers.

#14 Warith Alkebu-Lan ... The junior running back played in seven games ... saw extended time on special teams ... ran 12 times for 56 yards ... rushed for a season-high 19 yards on three attempts against Rhode Island (Oct. 27).

The sophomore running back played in 10 games ... ran for 208 yards on 56 carries ... the Spiders' best kick return man, he returned 14 kicks for 318 yards ... average of 22.7 ranked 50th in the nation ... season-long 54-yard kick return against Hofstra (Nov. 3) ... ran for season-high 50 yard on season-high 11 carries at James Madison (Oct. 13) ... gained 40 yards on nine carries at Northeastern (Oct. 20).
#21 David Edwards ... The sophomore running back played in all 11 games, starting four ... compiled 117 rushing yards on 30 attempts ... scored first two rushing touchdowns of his career against Villanova (Sept. 29) ... made one reception for 20 yards against the Wildcats ... ran for a season-high 23 yards at Maine (Oct. 6).
