UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va -- VMI forward Jason Conley, the nation's leading scorer, banked in two three-pointers in the final 20 seconds Friday night to lift the Keydets to an 82-80 victory over host Richmond in the first round of the Spider Invitational.
Conley hit the game-winner with 2.1 seconds, an off-balance 28-footer from just to the right of the top of the key. Richmond had gone ahead, 80-79, just seconds before with sophomore forward Mike Skrocki's baseline jumper. Richmond guard Reggie Brown's three-point attempt at the buzzer was wide right.
After a seesaw first half that saw the lead change 10 times, Richmond ran off a 20-10 run to take a double digit lead midway through the second stanza. A Jeff Myers' lay-up with 8:54 remaining gave the Spiders an 11-point advantage, 65-54. VMI rallied and took the lead (69-68) on a Conley 24-foot triple from the left side, which capped off a 15-3 Keydets run.
Conley scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half. Radee Skipworth and DAron Pressley added 16 apiece for VMI (5-4).
Brown scored 30 points and senior guard Scott Ungerer scored 18, both career highs, for the Spiders (5-6). Skrocki added 11.
