UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
University of Richmond Athletics Hall of Famer Warren Mills, the first Spiders basketball player to have his uniform number retired, was honored at halftime of Richmond's game with cross-town rival VCU December 1st at the Robins Center.
Mills was a two-time captain for Hall of Fame coach Les Hooker, scoring 1233 points. Mills is one of 33 1,000 point scorers in Richmond men's basketball history, and is currently 17th on the all-time list.
Mills was presented a replica plaque of the banner which hangs from the Robins Center rafters by Athletics Director Jim Miller and received a standing ovation from the crowd.
Only one other Spider has had his uniform retired since Mills. All-time leading scorer and Hall of Famer Johnny Newman (2,383 points) also has his number on a banner hanging in the Robins Center alongside the banner of his coach, Hall of Famer Dick Tarrant. Newman will also receive a replica plaque from the Spiders. He was recently signed by the Dallas Mavericks, continuing his remarkable NBA career which now spans 16 years.
