NEWARK, Del. -
The Richmond men's and women's track and field teams continued their assault on the Spiders' record books and turned in an outstanding team performance at the University of Delaware's Thomson Invitational Feb. 3 and 4.
On the women's side Diane Schreiber, a freshman from Johnsonburg, Pa., opened the meet with a seventh-place toss in the 20-pound weight throw of 41 feet, 10.75 inches Friday night. The mark added more than four feet to her previous school standard set in December.
The women's distance runners continued the night's trend. Sophomore Sarah Taylor (Orono, Maine) ran a personal-best time of 10 minutes, 30.30 seconds to place second in the 3,000 meters. Freshman Lyndsey Webber (Sayville, N.Y.) followed in fifth in 10:45.50. Sophomore Sarah Dill (Ashland, Ky.) and freshman Emily Ward (woodbury, N.J.) ran personal bests to place third and sixth, respectively, in the 5,000. Dill ran 18:39.08 and Ward ran 19:02.99.
The distance medley relay team capped the night with a 20-second win in 12:12.16, the fastest Richmond indoor time in 16 years. Sophomores Bridget Keenan (Newport News, Va.) and Sherry Sikora (Succasunna, N.J.), and seniors Andrea Tomforde (East Northport, N.Y.) and Tamika Williams (Southampton, Bermuda) composed the winning combination.
The Spiders' 3200 relay team also took first by a considerable margin. Keenan, Sikora, Taylor and sophomore Lauren Manero (Wilton, Conn.) ran 9:46.92 for a 16-second victory.
Williams placed third in the 400 meters in 58.64 seconds, improving her previous school best of 59.09. Williams rebounded from a mid-race collision during her initial start and won a slow heat to break into the top three. She also ran the third leg on the 1600-meter relay team that placed sixth in 4:06.97. Senior Andrea Tomforde (East Northport, N.Y.) and freshmen Maria Jusseaume (Canton, Ohio) and Amy Hahn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) joined Williams on the relay.
In the field events Julee Wilson (Chester Springs, Pa.) continued her impressive debut with a second-place showing in the long jump (17-9). Sophomore Cathleen Campbell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) placed third in the high jump with her best jump of the season, 5-4.25.
The men's team had its way with the 30-team field as well. Junior Ryan Tolhurst (Wexford, Pa.) lowered his week-old record in the 200 for the second time in as many races to 22.71. He won his heat out of lane six and placed third overall.
Justin McElfish, a junior from Woodbridge, Va., threw a season-best 49-11.25 to place fourth in the shot put. Freshman Zach Davis (Midlothian, Va.) ran 1:59.55 to win his heat and place 11th overall in his first collegiate 800. Senior Matt LeGrand (Huntsville, Ala.) placed 12th in a 30-man field of the 3000 in 8:55.80.
Both teams will head to Newport News, Va. Feb. 9 and 10 for the Christopher Newport University Invitational.
