RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond held American to just 32 points in 40 minutes of action to post a 73-32 win over the visiting Eagles at the Robins Center on Wednesday evening. It was the fewest points allowed by an opponent since December 5, 1953 when the Spiders defeated Randolph-Macon College, 93-30.
Richmond jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it. Richmond senior forward (Fayetteville, N.C./71st) three-pointer with 8:23 remaining in the first half gave the Spiders a 21-8 lead. After converting six of its first 11 shots of the game, Richmond would hit two of its next 13 shots, allowing American to inch closer. A layup by Eagles freshman forward Jernavis Draughn closed the margin to seven (25-18) with 3:06 to go in the first stanza. The Spiders pulled the lead back to double digits, as a Reggie Brown (Flushing, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) triple from the corner with seven seconds to go in the half, capped an 8-0 scoring run and gave Richmond a 33-18 lead at intermission. Stevenson scored 14 of his game-high 25 points in the first half.
Richmond opened up the second stanza with a 16-0 spurt (24-0 from the end of the first half) capitalizing on a nearly 10 minute American scoring drought. The Eagles first field goal of the second half came with 13:29 remaining in the contest after forward Patrick Doctor converted a three-point play. Richmond would close out the contest on a 34-11 tear to post the 73-32 victory.
Stevenson posted his eighth double-double of the season scoring 25 points and snaring 10 rebounds. Brown added 11 points in the contest. Forward Keith Gray led the Eagles with eight points. Doctor, needing six points to reach the 1,000 point plateau, was limited to three points.
The Spiders blocked a Robins Center team-record 13 shots. Senior forward Kinte Smith (Va. Beach. Va./Cape Henry) registered a season-high nine rebounds while sophomore forward Johnathan Collins (Norfolk, Va./Ryan Academy) tallied a career-best five rebounds. The win was the largest margin of victory by a Spiders team since December 2, 1981 when the Richmond defeated N.C. Wesleyan 85-41.
Richmond concludes its home schedule on Saturday as it hosts George Mason at the Robins Center. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
