Withers To Retire As Golf Coach

Richmond, Virginia - University of Richmond men's golf coach Nat Withers has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2000-2001 academic year.
Withers is in his 24th season at the helm of the Spiders golf program, which gives him the longest tenure of any current head coach at the University of Richmond.
During the fall of 2000, Withers guided the Spiders to two tournament victories in their first three events. Richmond rose to a #10 ranking in the Golfweek poll.
Richmond earned bids to the NCAA East Regional Men's Golf Championships each of the past two springs. In 1999, the Spiders received the first bid in school history and advanced to the Division I Men's Golf Championships. Withers was selected by his fellow coaches as Virginia Golf Coach of the Year.
Withers established one of the most respected golf programs in the Colonial Athletic Association. In 11 of the past 16 years, his squads have finished no worse than second at the CAA Tournament, while capturing three team championships and five individual titles.
In the past 14 years, Withers has led the Spiders to 11 overall team titles and had guided 13 individual tournament winners.
Withers is a 1959 graduate of the College of William & Mary. He earned his doctorate in mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon in 1971. In addition to his duties as golf coach, Withers has also been a professor of mathematics and computer science at Richmond.
A national search for a new golf coach will begin immediately.
