Spiders Finish Strong At The CAA Swimming and Diving Championships

FAIRFAX, Va. - The University of Richmond women's swimming and diving team claimed two first place finishes at the season-ending Colonial Athletic Association Championships at George Mason University.
Spider junior Kristin Newkirk (Marietta, Ga./Alan C. Pope) captured the 100 yard butterfly in 57.04. In addition, Newkirk combined with first-year swimmer Casey Dluhos (Savanah, Ga./Hersteel V. Jenkins), sophomore Elizabeth Cook (Rockville, Va./The Collegiate School) and newcomer Mauren Sabri (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercereburg Academy) to set a team record in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36.90.
Sophomore Katie Shipe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) placed second on the one meter board (249.95) and was third in three meter diving (411.45). Cook, Newkirk, Dluhos and Sabri registered a second place finish in the 400 freestyle relay in a school record-setting 3:31.05. Sabri placed third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.24 and Cook posted a third place finish in the 100 freestyle, clocking 53.03.
Richmond sophomore Leigh Figh (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy) was fourth in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:25.83. The Spiders had three of the top five finishes in the 100 freestyle, with Cook placing third (53.03), while Newkirk and Sabri each tied for fourth place (53.22).
"This was one of our CAA meets ever," reflected Spider head swimming and diving coach Warren Hammer. "We had a lot of success both at the individual and relay levels and this was our most complete performance of the year."
