RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond posted its 21st victory of the year and claimed the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title outright as they beat Virginia Commonwealth, 72-54 on Tuesday night in front of a season-high crowd of 7,306 at the ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. The Spiders, who ended the Rams 11-game home winning streak, improve to 21-6, 12-4 in the CAA while VCU falls to 16-13, 9-7.
Neither team led by more than three points or scored consecutive points in the first seven minutes of the contest as the two teams traded baskets. VCU guard LaMar Taylor's three-pointer with 14:06 remaining in the half knotted the score at 13-13, the last tie of the contest. A 10-2 Richmond scoring run capped off by a Greg Stevenson (Fayetteville, N.C./71st) two-handed slam put the visiting Spiders ahead, 23-15. Richmond held the Rams to just one field goal over the last eight minutes of the first stanza to post a 38-30 advantage at intermission. The Spiders shot 5-of-9 (.556) from three-point range in the first half with four different players accounting for a trey.
The Rams would close to within seven points (45-38) at the 14:19 mark after a L.F. Likcholitov free throw but that would be as close as they would get. Richmond would go on a 21-4 tear, including 12 straight points, that saw seven different players score. Stevenson paced the Spiders with 22 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Eric Zwayer (Sebring, Fla./Sebring), scoring in double figures for the sixth time in the past eight games, registered 11 points while sophomore guard Reggie Brown (Archbishop Molloy) added 10.
Richmond, winners of 10 of its past 11 games, conclude the regular season. The Spiders will not participate in the CAA Tournament.
