May 8, 2001
Williamsburg, Virginia - The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee has selected the 27 teams and six individuals for the NCAA Division I Men's Golf East Regional. The East Regional will be conducted May 17-19, at the Green Course of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va., hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University.
The East Regional will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently. All participants will compete throughout the entire 54 holes of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day's total score. The top ten teams and top two individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C., May 30-June 2.
Three teams from the Commonwealth will take the stage: Big East Champion Virginia Tech, CAA Champion and host school Virginia Commonwealth, and Richmond. Virginia Tech is ranked 11th in the Golfstat team rankings and 23rd in the MasterCard rankings. In addition, Virginia's Cameron Yancey qualified for the field as an individual.
The top three teams in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings will be coming to Williamsburg, as well as seven other teams in the Top 25. Consensus #1 Georgia headlines the field after winning the SEC Championship by 16 strokes three weeks ago. Other ranked SEC teams in the field include #9 Florida, #22 Auburn, #29 LSU, and #40 Ole Miss.
#2 Georgia Tech won the ACC Championship by eight strokes over #3 Clemson. Both teams will be in the East Regional, along with two ACC rivals, #7 North Carolina State and #21 Duke.
The individual competition should be just as heated with seven of the top eight players in the MasterCard rankings colliding on the Green Course. #1 Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech, #2 Erik Compton of Georgia, #3 Nick Cassini of Georgia, #4 John Engler of Georgia Tech, #6 Lucas Glover of Clemson, #7 David Sanchez of North Carolina State, and #8 Chris Wisler of East Tennessee State should all challenge for top individual honors. Molder, Cassini, Compton, Engler, Glover, and Wisler were all recently selected to the team that will represent the United States in the Palmer Cup. The Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style competition between the top collegians from the U.S. and the British Isles.
Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson, East Tennessee State, and Georgia State all advanced through regional competition to reach the 2000 NCAA Championships, where Georgia Tech lost to Oklahoma State in a playoff for the title.
