UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, VA. -- The Richmond Spiders football team is set to move into first class locker rooms this fall. Located on the ground floor of the Robins Center, the current freshman locker room and upper class locker room are being renovated into a single football dressing facility. The corridor between the existing rooms will be used to make the connection and provide additional space.
Ninety custom made premium wood lockers will replace the old metal lockers, new toilet partitions, sinks, faucet fixtures, ceiling tiles, lighting, air conditioning, heating and carpet will be installed. The facility will have its own outside entrance as well as interior access from the Robins Center adjacent to the athletic training facilities. A new sound system will also be installed.
"This is another indication of the commitment by the University to our football program and the football student-athletes," said Head Football Coach Jim Reid. "It enhances our image of football excellence and gives us a facility that we can point to with pride as we accelerate our recruiting efforts. When the student-athletes return in August, they'll be greeted by a facility that is state of the art and has a 'wow' effect. When they walk in there you'll hear a lot of 'wows!' "
The completion date is scheduled for August 1, just in time for preseason camp. The defending Atlantic 10 co-champion Spiders open their 2001 season September 1 at Virginia.
Below is the progress as of June 5th. (check this story soon for updated pictures!)

The new entrances (outside entrance on the left, inside on the right) have been built and the project is ready for the next phase to begin.
Below are pictures of the progress as of May 31st.

Masons build a wall that will be part of the new entrance.

Workers jackhammer the floor to prepare it for the masons.

The locker rooms have been completely gutted for the project.
