Richmond, Va. - The University of Richmond posted its second consecutive Homecoming shutout with a dominating 26-0 decision against James Madison in an Atlantic 10 contest played before 8,113 fans at UR Stadium.
Spider senior Doug Kirchner kicked his way into the record book by establishing new single-game program marks for field goals made (4) and points by a kicker (14). Kirchner made field goals from 24, 22, 20 and 22, while also converting on both extra-point attempts.
Despite not capitalizing on many opportunities deep in James Madison territory, the Spider offense did possess the ball for 41:06 and ran 84 plays compared to the Dukes' 35 - a new all-time program low. The Spiders outgained JMU 378-144 on the evening.
Richmond forced a season-high six turnovers and scored a season-high 26 points. Senior Ramon Richeson made the first of two interceptions and set up a 44-yard drive that Kirchner completed with his first field goal at 4:13 of the opening quarter.
The Spiders then struck for 13 points in the second quarter to increase their lead to 16-0 at halftime. An 11-yard pass from senior D'Arcy Wills to junior David Edwards was sandwiched between two Kirchner field goals. Wills finished the day 8-of-17 for 115 yards and two touchdowns.
His second touchdown was a strike to a diving Boyd Ouden in the corner of the endzone at 3:55 of the fourth quarter. The connection completed the scoring and marked Ouden's only reception of the game.
It was Richmond's first shutout since Oct. 27, 2001 when the Spiders celebrated that Homecoming game with a 28-0 thrashing of fourth-ranked Rhode Island.
Senior Mark Thompson led a passionate Spider defense with nine tackles, three for loss, and two fumble recoveries. Junior Rashad Smith also picked off a JMU pass and recovered a fumble.
