UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond football senior Steve Boyer earned Atlantic 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week after making a team-high 11 tackles, five for loss, and forcing a fumble in a 35-13 win against No. 24 William and Mary on Nov. 23.
Playing in his final collegiate game, Boyer led a Spider defense that allowed 239 total yards - six rushing. He grabbed four sacks, raised his season total to a team-high 10, and now ranks third on Richmond's all-time single-season sack list.
In 11 games this fall, Boyer ranked sixth on the team, first among defensive lineman, with 64 tackles (45 solo). He led the Spiders with 20 tackles for loss and ranked third with nine quarterback hurries. The Richmond, Va. native also leads the Atlantic 10 with five forced fumbles.
The accolade was the second this season for Boyer. He also earned A-10 Defensive Player of the Week after making seven tackles, five for loss, and four sacks against Rhode Island on Oct. 26. He shared the honor with Northeastern's Steve Anzalone this week.
Richmond completed the 2002 campaign with a 4-7 overall record, 4-5 in A-10 action. The Spiders 35-13 win in the season-finale marked the largest margin of victory against their long-time rival since a 42-17 win on Nov. 21, 1998. It was head coach Jim Reid's second largest margin of victory against a ranked opponent during his tenure at Richmond (28-0 vs. #4 Rhode Island, Oct. 27, 2001).
