EMMITSBURG, Md. - Senior Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C.) scored a career-high 32 points to lead Richmond to a 77-52 win over Mount Saint Mary's this evening at Knott Arena. Richmond improves to 2-0 on the season, while Mount Saint Mary's falls to 0-2.
Sophomore Sandie Walker (York, Pa.) contributed a career-high 15 points off the bench and classmate Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) recorded her second 'double-double' of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Spiders got off to a quick start, scoring 12 points before Mount Saint Mary's got on the board eight minutes in with a free throw by Beth Foster. Tanner dominated the game's first ten minutes, scoring ten of Richmond's first 14 points. Richmond built the lead to 15 off a steal and lay-up by Walker, but the Mountaineers responded and cut the lead to one after connecting on threes in consecutive possessions with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Flavin answered with two lay-ups in under a minute to help the Spiders take a 35-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Richmond's defense held strong in the second-half, limiting Mount Saint Mary's to a shooting percentage of .222. Tanner continued to dominate in the paint, scoring 17 second-half points and grabbing six defensive boards and helping Richmond roll to the 77-52 victory.
Richmond next travels to Piscataway, N.J. to participate in the Rutger's Coca-Cola Classic, facing Northwestern on Saturday, November 30 at 2:00 p.m.
