AMHERST, Mass.- The University of Richmond scored a season-high seven goals in route to a 7-3 romp over UMass on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field in Atlantic 10 women's soccer action. Junior Edda Gararsdottir and sophomore Whitney Sikes scored two goals and added two assists apiece for Richmond's 11th win of the season (11-5-2, 8-3-0).
Gardarsdottir, Sikes and senior Jenna Merriam each scored a goal in the first half as the Spiders built a 3-0 lead at the half
Junior forward Jessica Marino scored her fifth goal of the season just 2:03 into the second half giving the Spiders a comfortable cushion four-goal lead. Six minutes later, UMass would knock in its first score of the game. Senior Meredith Johnson would quickly add to the Spiders lead, netting the visitors fifth score of the game 42 seconds later. The Minutewomen cut the lead to 5-3 after two quick scores, but once again the Spiders would put the game out of reach as Sikes and Gardarsdottir added their second scores of the game, respectively.
Richmond's seven goals are the most for the program since Sept. 23, 1997 when that Spiders squad tallied 11 goals (a program-high).
