UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va.- Senior guard Jeff Myers (Rockford, Ill.) matched a career-high, scoring 18 points to lead the University of Richmond to a 64-60 overtime win over Charlotte on Saturday evening at the Robins Center. The win marks the program's first over the 49ers in three tries.
Junior forward Mike Skrocki (Howell, N.J.) added 13 points for the Spiders (2-1), including 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Junior center Eric Zwayer (Sebring, Fla.) registered a career-tying 10 rebounds. Demon Brown and Curtis Withers paced Charlotte (1-2) with 13 points a piece. Niners cente Calvin Clemmons registered a team-high 10 rebounds.
Both teams had offensive woes in the first stanza, as the squads combined to shoot 14-of-49 from the field (.286). After Brown's triple at the 8:59 mark gave the 49ers a three-point edge (11-8), Richmond erupted on a 15-3 tear. Sophomore Jamaal Scott (Phoenix, Az.) capped off the run and gave UR its largest advantage of the half (9). Richmond, who scored 12 points off 14 Charlotte turnovers, led 23-16 at the break. In the final 8:59 of the first half, the 49ers committed eight turnovers and shot just 1-of-4 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free throw line.
Charlotte closed the gap to open the second half, scoring the first eight points of the half, to take a 24-23 lead. Zwayer's tip-in at the 9:15 mark gave the Spiders an eight-point lead, 41-33. The 49ers would not go away quietly, finally taking the lead, 54-51, on a Mitchell Baldwin two-plus the foul with 34.7 seconds remaining in the game. The 49ers Eddie Basden bumped Skrocki as he launched a three from the left side with 23 seconds on the clock. He would net all three free throw attempts to send the contest into overtime.
In the extra period, Richmond jumped out to the early lead. Myers pull-up 14-foot jumper at the 1:52 mark gave the Spiders a comfortable four-point lead (60-56). Richmond sunk 4-of-6 free throws to register the 64-60 win.
Richmond continues its home stand this Wednesday, December 4, hosting UAB at 7:30 p.m.
