Richmond Dropped By Pepperdine, 83-77

STANFORD, Calif.--The University of Richmond, making its first appearance in the Golden State since 1997, dropped an 83-77 decision to Pepperdine in the opening round of the Stanford Invitational on Monday evening at the Maples Pavilion. The loss was the Spiders (3-3) second straight of the season.
Senior Jeff Myers (Rockford, Ill.) and junior Tony Dobbins (Mitchellville, Md.) each scored 17 points. After missing the first five games of the season with a lower back sprain, senior guard Reggie Brown (Flushing, N.Y.) added 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Terrance Johnson poured in a season-best 23 points for the Waves (4-3) while teammate Jimmy Mickens added 20 points.
Richmond led by as many as six points twice in the first stanza. A Dobbins fast break layup at the 11:55 mark put UR ahead, 15-9. Richmond would turn the ball over five times and miss five shots in the next 5:33 of play as the Waves erupted on a 16-0 run to forge a 25-15 lead with 6:48 left. Johnson's three at the horn gave Pepperdine a 40-27 lead at the break.
In the second stanza it was the Spiders turn to run, a 15-2 spurt to be exact. Myers, who matched a career-best twith five '3's, hit a three-pointer from the far side with 14:27 left in the game to tie the contest at 47-all. The Waves countered with a flurry of triples but Richmond would counter as Brown nailed his first three-pointer of the season to tie the contest at 60-60 at the 7:50 mark. The Waves quickly built an advantage, stretching the lead back to six (68-62) after a Mike Westphal three-pointer with 4:59 remaining. The Spiders would crawl as close as one (70-67) less than a minute later after a Jamaal Scott long ball. Richmond turnovers on the next two possessions closed the open door for the Spiders.
Richmond faces the host Stanford Cardinal, stunned by Montana in the second game of the night., Game time is set for 7:00 PM PST (10:00 PM EST) at Maples Pavilion.
