The field is set for the 2002 Spider Invitational and the action gets started TONIGHT. Norfolk State and VMI do battle at 5:30 with Richmond hosting Harvard at 7:30 p.m. at the Robins Center.
Last year's Spider Invitational marked the return of a regular-season tournament hosted by the University of Richmond in a decade. Before the Spider Invitational, Richmond hosted the Central Fidelity Holiday Classic (1986-1991) and the Spider Classic (1976-1981). The Spiders are 18-8 all-time in regular season tournament games played at the Robins Center. Richmond also entertained opponents in the UR Invitational from 1954-1962.
Richmond is competing in a regular-season tournament for the ninth consecutive season with its participation earlier this month in the Stanford Invitational and now in its own tournament, the Spider Invitational. Last season, the Spiders played in the Las Vegas Classic; falling at Cincinnati and Mississippi State in the first two rounds before defeating La. Monroe and Southwest Missouri State. In the inaugural Spider Invitational last season, VMI nipped Richmond before the Spiders bested Cornell in the consolation game. In the past six years, Richmond had compiled a 10-8 record in regular-season tournaments, including its 1-1 mark at the Stanford Invitational.
