RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Emanuel Mathis hit eight consecutive free throws in overtime Saturday night, leading Virginia Commonwealth past Richmond 73-68.
Jeff Myers forced the overtime for Richmond (3-2) by hitting a 3-pointer with one second left in regulation, but the Rams (3-2) continued the torrid free throw shooting that started with 4:55 left, when they began a streak of making 16 in a row.
After Mike Skrocki made 1 of 2 from the line to begin the extra period for the Spiders, Mathis hit four in a row to give the Rams a 67-64 lead they didn't lose.
The Spiders closed to within a point twice, but Domonic Jones answered a basket by Myers with Virginia Commonwealth's only basket of the overtime, and Mathis followed a basket by Eric Zwayer by hitting two more free throws to make it 71-68.
Jones led VCU with 19 points and Mathis had 16, going 10-for-10 from the line.
Jamaal Scott led Richmond with 21 points and Skrocki had 17.
