Sophomore Mike Skrocki (Howell, N.J./Christian Brothers) sunk two free throws with 2:05 remaining to give Richmond a two-point lead at 61-59, which proved to be the final outcome, as the Spiders slipped by Saint Joseph's on Wednesday evening at the Robins Center.
The Spiders (14-10, 8-3 A-10) nailed three of its first four shots of the game to open up a 9-2 lead. Senior guard Scott Ungerer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) scored all nine of those points for Richmond in a 2:45 span, all from behind the arc. Richmond led by seven with just over ten minutes remaining in the half, but the Hawks (15-8, 9-2 A-10) would counterattack, matching the Spiders shot for shot. St Joe's tore out a 7-0 run to tie the contest at 20 (7:32), the first of four ties in the first stanza. The visitors would grab their first lead of the game at the 4:59 mark when sophomore Jameer Nelson weaved his way into the lane to put the Hawks up, 27-26. The score seesawed the remainder of the half, as the teams went into the locker room knotted at 32.
The Hawks pulled out to a 44-37 lead less than four minutes into the second half after senior Bill Phillips drilled a triple from the right side. The Spiders would fight back scraping for every basket. Junior center Jonathan Collins' follow shot and subsequent free throw with 4:53 left gave the home team a 57-55 advantage and a lead they would not relinquish. St. Joe's pulled even at 59 after a darting Nelson drove coast to coast with 2:57 remaining. However, the Hawks would not score again, failing to convert three attempts in the final 1:47 of play. Richmond junior guard Reggie Brown strip of the ball with three seconds remaining sealed the victory, the Spiders sixth in their past seven games.
Ungerer led Richmond in scoring for the first time this season with 15 points, all from three-point land. Skrocki added 13 points, while Collins and sophomore forward Tony Dobbins each pulled down 10 rebounds. The Hawks were paced by Nelson's 21 points. Marvin O'Connor added 15 points, but failed to convert a field goal in the second half.
