CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Richmond women's tennis team was defeated by state foe Virginia Saturday afternoon, 6-1, in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers, ranked 45th in the country, won five of six singles matches and claimed the doubles point. Junior Vanessa Bagnato (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) had the lone Spider victory in singles action.
Bagnato topped Virginia's Jennifer Tuchband at the No. 2 single spot, 7-5, 5-7 (10-8), to win her fifth match at the No. 2 position in her last six attempts. While Bagnato was victorious in a super-tiebreaker, freshman Lindsay Cox (Finchampstead, Workingberks, UK/Edgbarrow) was not as fortunate as she fell, 3-6, 6-3 (10-8) in No. 3 singles to Amy O'Donnell. These two Spiders also picked up a victory in No. 2 doubles, defeating Virginia's Bechliwanis sisters, 8-3.
The loss was Richmond's (7-6, 2-0) first in its last six outings, as five of the team's six losses have come against ranked opponents, including three teams currently ranked in the top 15 in the country. The Spiders will look to get back on the winning track Wednesday, March 27, as they host Old Dominion at 2:00 p.m. at the UR Tennis Complex.
