No. 22 Baseball Sets Season High In Runs and Hits, Defeats Duquesne 17-6

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond offense pounded out a season-high 20 hits and scored a season high in runs to sweep an Atlantic 10 series against Duquesne, 17-6, at Pitt Field.
Six Spiders collected at least two hits, led by sophomore Matt Craig who went 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior David Reaver went 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI while sophomore Bryan Pritz stroked three hits in six at bats and scored four times and collected four RBI. Freshman first baseman Jim Fasano went 2-4 and cracked his third homer of the season.
Duquesne (17-14, 6-6 Atlantic 10) scored its first runs of the series in the top of the first. After Gary Lee drew a walk, he came home on a Pete Maropis home run to left field, his eighth homer of the season. Maropis finished the game 2-4 with four RBI.
The Spiders (32-4, 12-0 Atlantic 10) mounted a four-run attack to take a 4-2 lead after one. Centerfielder Pritz reached on an error and moved to third when third baseman Reaver roped a double to right field. It extended his career-long hit streak to 29 games. Short stop Craig drove in Pritz and Reaver with a single through the right side and then scored on a Fasano RBI single. Left fielder Vito Chiaravalloti scored the fourth run on a Brian Ruscello sac fly.
The Dukes closed within one run, 4-3, in the third when Maropis' ground out knocked in Lee. John Reig tied the game with a solo shot to left field in the fourth. Rieg finished the afternoon 3-3.
Richmond powered its way back in front with two home runs in the fourth that knocked Duquesne starter Jim Popp (2-2) from the game. Reaver led off the frame with a solo shot to center and Fasano followed with a two-run bomb over the right field wall to give the Spiders' a 7-4 lead. Richmond's fourth run of the inning came home when designated hitter A.J. Board scored on a perfect suicide squeeze bunt from catcher Adam Tidball.
The home squad increased its lead to 9-4 with a run in the fifth. Pritz led off the frame with a double down the left field line and scored on a Reaver single up the middle. The Spiders added five more in the sixth to take a 14-4 lead. The highlight of the inning was Pritz's grand slam, his fifth home run of the season and third of this week.
Duquesne scored two runs on four hits off Richmond reliever Jason Bolinski in the seventh. Jason Startari led off the frame with a solo dinger and Dan Schwartzbauer also scored on a Maropis double. The Spiders eclipsed their previous season-high in runs and hits in the seventh when Tidball belted his seventh home run of the season to give Richmond a 15-6 lead on 17 hits. Two more runs came home on a Mike Gula triple to complete the scoring at 17-6.
Sophomore Matt McLoughlin earned the win after working 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one hit and walked one. Duquesne starter Jim Popp suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits.
Richmond returns to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 against Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
