Track & Field Competes At Lou Onesty Invitational

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Led by freshman Ashley Bell's second-place finish in the 200 meter dash, the University of Richmond enjoyed numerous highlights at the Lou Onesty Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. on April 13.
A native of Richmond, Va. and a J.R. Tucker High School product, Bell crossed the tape in 25.63 seconds, just .45 seconds shy of the eventual event champion, Phakiso Collins of Howard University. The freshman finished just .13 seconds in front of teammate Julee Wilson who finished tied for fifth with a time of 25.76.
Another top-5 finish was earned by junior Ruth Chege. A 2001 All-Atlantic 10 Cross Country honoree, Chege turned in a time of 4:29.47 in the 1,500 meter run and placed fifth. The Spiders second fifth-place finish was earned by Cathleen Campbell who cleared the high jump bar at 5'02".
In the field events, junior Rachel Shrewsbury and sophomore Diane Schreiber continued to impress. Shrewsbury placed third in the shot put with a heave of 42'11.50". Schreiber's best showing came in the discus where she finished sixth with a throw of 126'9.00". Shrewsbury placed seventh in the event after launching the disucs 124'10.00".
The men's team was bolstered by contributions from Spider football players. Sophomore Rashad Smith finished fifth in the 100-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 10.84 seconds. Clement Johnson finished ninth in the event with a time of 10.91. Sophomore Boyd Ouden, the Spiders' leading wide receiver during the 2001 season, finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.26. Junior Justin McElfish earned a ninth-place finish in the shot put after a 46'7.25" heave.
Senior David Blanchard raced to an eighth-place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.04. Another eighth-place finish was captured by sophomore Jon Lauder who recorded a 15:24.24 in the 5,000-meter run.
Richmond returns to action at the Metro Championships in Emmitsburg, Md. on April 20.
