Women's Soccer Selects 2002 Team Captains

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's soccer team has selected its captains for the upcoming 2002 soccer season. Rising seniors Meredith Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), Katie Krein (Marshfield, Mass./Thayer) and Anne Rieser (Middletown, Md./Middletown) were voted by their peers to captain the Spiders this fall.
Johnson, a midfielder, started all 20 matches a season ago. The redshirt senior fired 25 shots, registering one goal and two assists. She netted the game-winner in an overtime win over George Washington on September 25, the school's first win as an all-sports member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. In three seasons, Johnson has appeared in 60 matches, earning 58 starts. This will be the second year she has served as co-captain.
Krein saw action in 16 games, making 15 starts in the defensive midfield. She took seven shots on goal in the fall of 2001 while helping to hold opponents to 26 goals on the season. She has appeared in 59 matches in her career, earning 36 starts.
Rieser, a forward, appeared in all 20 matches last fall, making 19 starts. She collected one goal and two assists while taking 13 shots. Her lone goal came in a 2-0 win over A-10 rival Saint Joseph's on October 12.
The Spiders and head coach Peter Albright finished 10-9-1, 9-3-0 A-10, last season in their first season in the A-10, advancing to the championship game. Richmond opens its 2002 schedule on Friday, August 30 hosting the UR/Wachovia/First Market Invitational. The Spiders face American at 7:00 p.m. in the nightcap. State rival James Madison takes on Rutgers at 5:00 p.m.
