UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
University of Richmond senior defensive back Ramon Richeson has been named this year's receipient of the Chuck Boone Scholarship. The announcement was made recently at the third annual Chuck Boone Golf Outing, held at Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond.
Richeson becomes the second Spider football player to win the award, following former teammate Andrew Bogle, who was the first-ever receipient of the honor in 2001.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a rising senior student-athlete who exemplifies the hard work, leadership and dedication shown by Boone duing his forty years of association with University of Richmond athletics. Boone retired in 2000 after serving Richmond as a student-athlete, coach and administrator. He was the school's director of athletics for 23 years.
Richeson, an All-Conference candidate, returns for his senior season in 2002 as one of four team captains. In 2001, he played in all eleven games, making nine starts. The Williamsburg native ranked fourth on the team with 72 tackles, including four double-digit tackle performances. He led the Spiders with a season high 12 tackles at Virginia.
During the 2000 season, Richeson earned National Defensive Player of the Week after making eight tackles, two interceptions, one sack and one forced fumble against Maine. His sack and forced fumble came when Maine had second-and-goal from Richmond's two with nine minutes left in the game and the Spiders leading 10-6. He capped the day, and the Spiders win, with his second interception with 6:55 left and Richmond leading 10-6, snagging the pass on the Maine 27 and returning it 11 yards to set up Richmond's final touchdown.
Richeson and the Spiders open their 2002 season Thursday August 29th at Division 1-A Temple. Kickoff is 7pm ET.
