Baseball Honors Continue To Accumulate

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond baseball team added to its list of accolades as the 2002 Virginia SID All-State Team and the ABCA/Rawlings All-East Team was announced. Five Spider players were awarded All-State with head coach Ron Atkins and pitcher Tim Stauffer earning the highest honors.
Atkins, in his 18th year as the Spider skipper, was named Virginia Baseball Coach of the Year as he led Richmond to a program-best 53 wins and its first-ever NCAA Tournament Regional title. The Spiders also won the Atlantic 10 West Division title in their first year in the conference.
Stauffer, a four-time First Team All-American and A-10 Pitcher of the Year, was selected Virginia Player of the Year. The sophomore was also on the All-East first team and finished his season leading the nation in wins (15) and sixth in ERA (1.54). His innings pitched (146), strikeouts (140) and opponents' batting average (.208) all led the Atlantic 10. He broke five different single-season Richmond records, including complete games (13), wins and strikeouts.
Sophomore shortstop Matt Craig and junior third baseman David Reaver, both All-Americans, were also named to the VaSID All-State squad. A First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection, Craig led the league in RBI (84). He started all 66 games, batting .375 with 19 home runs. Reaver finished the year with an A-10 best .391 batting average and a spot on the All-Atlantic 10 first team. He broke school records in at bats (266), hits (104), and doubles (30). Craig and Reaver also made the All-East first team.
Sophomore Adam Tidball earned a spot on the VaSID All-State team after being named to the All-East first team and All-Atlantic 10 first team. The defensive leader behind the plate batted .339 with 11 home runs with 45 RBI. Outfielder Bryan Pritz finished his sophomore campaign with a UR record-breaking 78 runs. He is a VaSID All-State selection as well as a member of the All-Atlantic 10 first team.
All-American first basemen Vito Chiaravolloti was named to the All-East Second Team after leading the Spiders in home runs (23) and breaking the program record for RBI in a season (86). Richmond pitcher Mike McGirr joined Chiaravolloti on the All-East Second Team after going 12-1 with a 4.06 earned run average in 17 starts.
