RICHMOND, Va. --- The James Madison Dukes captured a decisive 5-1 victory over the University of Richmond in the championship finals of the Wachovia Challenge presented by Marriott on Sunday afternoon. The venue was moved from First Market Stadium to UR Stadium due excess rain on the field and a power outage on the UR campus associated with weather.
Dukes freshman Kim Argy netted the game's first score in the 15th minute when Richmond defender Katie Krein (Marshfield, Mass.) attempting to clear the ball out of box, bounced the ball instead off Argy who then booted the score. James Madison extended its lead 15 minutes later when Abby Karpinski delivered a picture-perfect corner kick, headed in by Karly Skladany to make it 2-0.
Richmond sophomore Meghan Ogilvie's (Springfield, Va.) corner kick in the 36th minute ricocheted off a JMU defender, resting in front of classmate Lyndal Hegamyer (Frederick, Md.) who drilled the 20-yarder into the right corner of the net. The Dukes carried a 2-1 lead over Richmond into the locker room.
The Dukes offense ignited in the second half. Senior Beth McNamara registered two goals in the first nine minutes of the stanza. The first came when Deanna Saracino's shot on goal hit the crossbar and a quick McNamara knocked in the loose ball for the score. The senior midfielder, named the tournament's offensive MVP, took a cross from A. Karpinkski in the 45th minute and drilled the ball into the right corner to give the visitors a comfortable 4-1 lead. A late goal from Sklandany, her second of the afternoon, would be the final tally of the day.
In the first consolation game, Rutgers University defeated American University, 4-1. After a scoreless first half, the Scarlet Knights got on the board in the 51st minute when sophomore Michelle McNamara found the net off the cross from teammate Boo Schubert. RU stretched its lead to 2-0 when Erin McIntyre sent a pass from midfield to a streaking Carli Lloyd who went one-on-one with American goalie Jen Liese and won the battle.
American sophomore Erika Peters, just into the game, found her way through traffic in front of the net to drill a 12-yard shot into the left corner for the Eagles first score. The Scarlet Knights put the contest out of reach, scoring twice more in the final eight minutes of the game.
