Former Spider defensive back Winston October and Edmonton Eskimo teammates Ronald Williams and Rahim Abdullah were featured on CNN's "Connie Chung Tonight" last night (September 23) for their heroic efforts in saving a woman from a burning apartment complex.
The three players received help from teammates Bruce Beaton and Sheldon Benoit when they caught a woman who plunged from a third-story apartment to avoid the blaze.
Reports say that the players urged the woman not to jump but because of the heat she was forced to. Approximately 15 Eskimo players live in the apartment complex.
In four years with the Spiders, October made 338 tackles -- ninth on UR's all-time list. The Dale City, Va. native made 105 tackles during his senior season and snagged six interceptions on his way to earning Second Team All-America honors. His 12 career picks rank third on Richmond's all-time list. The defensive back also holds Richmond's record for punt returns in a season (41) and a career (112).
Many of these facts were taken from an article in the Edmonton Sun.
Special thanks to the Edmonton Eskimos, Edmonton Sun and former Spider Toby Booker.
