RICHMOND, VA - The University of Richmond women's golf program has joined the Colonial Athletic Association for its inaugural season of women's golf competition. The CAA today announced that the conference will sponsor women's golf as a championship sport in the Spring of 2003.
"We are excited about the addition of women's golf to our championship roster," noted CAA commissioner Thomas E. Yeager. "The sport continues to grow in popularity and we are eager to be a part of that growth process."
Six teams will battle for the inaugural conference championship that will be conducted in the Richmond area on April 20-22 as part of the CAA Spring Sports Festival. Hofstra University, James Madison University and the College of William and Mary will be joined by associate members University of Dayton, University of Richmond and Xavier University for the 54-hole event. Details regarding the tournament site are being finalized and are expected to be announced shortly.
By conducting a championship in the Spring, the CAA will be able to get its two-year clock for NCAA automatic qualification started. The target date for obtaining the AQ is 2005. Old Dominion University, which added a women's golf program in May, is scheduled to compete in 2003-04 and UNC Wilmington is expected to transfer its program in 2005.
The Spiders return to action this weekend at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J. The event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29.
