The newest University of Richmond varsity sport begins competition this weekend as the Spider women's golf team enters its inaugural event at the Unlimited Potential/Bay Tree Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston. Designed by George Fazio, Bay Tree offers three courses, although this event will be played on two. The Green course -- par-72, 5,903 yards -- will handle the majority of competition, while the Gold course -- par-72, 5,873 yards - will also be used.
To lead Richmond's 19th varsity sport, LaRee Sugg was hired as the head coach on March 4, 2002. The former NCAA All-American, Sugg led UCLA to the 1991 national championship before beginning a stellar professional career on the LPGA Tour and the Women's Professional Golfer's European Tour.
Sugg and the Spiders will compete against 34 Division I teams in the season-opening event. UNC Wilmington returns to defend their 2001 title, along with several other teams from the Mid-Atlantic region vying for the team medal.
Following their inaugural event, the Spiders return to action at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky. from Sept. 13-15.
