Women's Golf Tees Off!

N. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- At 7:36 a.m. on Friday, September 6, Elizabeth Cushing crushed a drive and officially opened the University of Richmond's 19th varsity sport. A freshman, Cushing was the first Spider of the women's golf team to tee off at their inaugural tournament -- the Unlimited Potential/Bay Tree Classic at the Bay Tree Golf Plantation in N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Cushing went on to finish the round with an 83 and tie with teammate Sarah O'Neill for 92nd overall in the event. Classmates Lesley Monachino (84), Whitney McComis (85) and Lauren Ritter (88) also competed for Richmond on this historic day.
"I think all the kids were very excited to get the season underway," Head Coach LaRee Sugg said. "I thought for the first round of the season we did relatively well. However, I know we can play much better in the future."
The Spiders are tied for 25th after shooting a first-round 335. East Carolina leads the event after carding a first-round 301.
The second round will be played on Saturday, September 7 with the third and final round being played on Sunday, September 8.
