Richmond Coach Jerry Wainwright
On Richmond's not getting to the line:
"We're a physical team and it was a physical game.
Now, you can't tell me we were 18 times more physical
than Dayton, but that's what they saw and that's what
they called. Obviously it had an effect on the
offense."
On whether UD and XU are similar teams:
"No, I don't see any similarities between Xavier and
Dayton. They're both real different. Dayton has
parts-- good players, but they all help each other.
We played Xavier without Chalmers, and they also have
West and Sato who are great players. Dayton seems to
have more experience playing as a team."
On Dayton's inside game:
"We had to really worry about Finn, Waleskowski and
Green down underneath. They have a good rotation, and
they make plays to get baskets."
Comparing game to NASCAR Racing:
"This was a short track race. A bump-and-banger.
That's how it always is when we come to Dayton."
On playing in Dayton:
"Well, I love red. This is a great arena. There are
five or six old ladies here who go to church everyday
and when I come here I think they question my
heritage. I knew coach Donoher well, and Dayton was a
team I followed when I coached high school in the
Midwest."
Dayton Head Coach Oliver Purnell
"Defense has got to be our battle cry. This was our best defensive game to date. We went wire-to-wire with a tremendous defensive and rebounding effort tonight. Our offense was pretty good as well. It was balanced. Our guys are getting the open shots because we're making the extra pass."
"This was an important win for us. We're playing for first place. You want to start there and stay there. I think that was on our minds and psychologically that worked in our favor. But it's still early. It's a league race now. We've gotten through the first phase of it. I liked the three straight (games) at home when I first saw them, and I like them even better now that we've got those wins. Now we've got to prove that we can do it on the road."
"Defense will sustain you on the road because you don't always know how you're going to shoot the ball on the road."
"Josh (Postorino) did a good job on the scouting report. And our guys followed it to a 'T'."
"We put a very good team away tonight, and that's something that we hadn't done yet. Richmond was not going to quit."
"What can I say about Brooks Hall? That's a man's stat line. He did everything but sell popcorn tonight. It was a tremendous game for him. He, along with D.J. (Stelly), did a nice job on (Mike) Skrocki."
"GW is struggling right now. They have a young team. I know they're coming back home, and looking to get well. We will get their best. We have to be ready."
University of Dayton Player quotes:
Dayton Senior Forward Nate Green:
"This was a very strong victory tonight. You want to
be first in the conference and that's right where we
are right now."
Nate Green on his second half block: "He didn't see me coming and I caught him. I have been saving my hops for something like that."
"I can't take all of the success as to why I was playing so well, the guards just kept getting me the ball and things worked out."
Dayton Senior Forward Brooks Hall:
"The reason this was such a big win is because I feel
it is the closest we've been to playing a full 40
minutes all year. This is the best defensive effort we
had all year."
"This is a special ball club we have here, it's starting to feel like something special here. If you look at the stats, our leading scorer only had like 14 points, so that's proof that we are playing as a team."
"A lot of the success we are having right now has to do with being a veteran ball club."
Dayton Senior Forward D.J Stelly:
"Our home crowd is better than what I have seen
anywhere else in the country and that's including
Duke."
"None of Richmond's players appeared to be rattled at all, I just think we played a good game all around."
Dayton Junior Guard Ramod Marshall
"Every time Nate (Green) brings that kind of intensity
we win games."
"We wanted to make sure we kept out home-field advantage, and now we have to go out and win some on the road."
"We haven't been in this spot in a while. We wanted to get out front (in the A-10 West) and make people chase us. Now teams are coming after us. We play better in big games, and now they're all big games."
