Men's Basketball Wins Second Exhibition, 77-64

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Mike Skrocki led three Spiders in double figures, scoring a game-high 22 points, to lead Richmond to a 77-64 victory over Coaches vs. Cancer tonight at the Robins Center.
In the Spiders' final exhibition game, Skrocki went eight-of-13 from the field, including four-of-eight on three-pointers. Freshman Daon Merritt added 10 points to go along with five assists and four steals, while junior Jamaal Scott notched 13 points and seven rebounds.
Picked late last week to the Atlantic 10 pre-season Second Team, senior Tony Dobbins grabbed 10 rebounds and dished five assists for the Spiders.
Richmond broke open a close game with an 11-0 run to close the first half. Skrocki drained a triple with 34 seconds remaining to give the home squad a 38-28 lead at the break. Coaches vs. Cancer responded in the second half, trimming the lead to just three (48-45) when Reggie Warren, from West Florida University, slammed home a dunk.
Over the next 5:43, the Spiders went on a 17-5 run, highlighted by a steal and layup from Merritt to give Richmond a commanding 70-55 lead with 5:57 to play. The game stayed in double figures the rest of the way.
Mike Campbell scored 19 and Reggie Warren 18 to lead Coaches vs. Cancer.
Richmond shot 50 percent for the game and held Coaches vs. Cancer to just 37.5 percent in addition to out-rebounding them 46-34. The Spiders continued their hot shooting from behind the arc, making 9-of-19 (47.4 percent).
Richmond opens the 2003-04 campaign at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17 when it hosts Mississippi Valley State in the Guardians Classic.
