UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Mike Skrocki had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Richmond Spiders to a 62-46 victory over the Mississippi Valley St. Delta Devils tonight at the Robins Center in the opening round of the Guardians Classic.
Skrocki went 10-for-13 from the free-throw line and was joined by senior Eric Zwayer who was the only other Spider in double figures as he scored 10 points and grabbed nine boards. Attarrius Norwood recorded a double-double for the Delta Devils, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Richmond (1-0) broke open a close game midway through the second half with a 16-2 run that gave the Spiders their largest lead of the game at 53-35 with 6:15 to play.
The Spiders held the Delta Devils (0-1) to 25 percent shooting for the game despite shooting just 29.7 percent themselves. They made up for their poor shooting by making 22-of-34 free throws.
The lead changed hands several times in the first half before senior Jamaal Scott's steal and lay-in broke a 22-22 tie and gave Richmond a lead they would not relinquish. The bucket started a 9-0 run that ended the first half and started the second as the Delta Devils never got closer than four the rest of the way.
Richmond advances to face New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night. Mississippi Valley State will face Mount St. Mary's at 5 p.m. in the consolation game.
