UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va.--The University of Richmond women's soccer team, coached by head coach Peter Albright, advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship title match before ending a winning 2003 campaign with an 11-9-2 season mark. The squad can boast many impressive feats after playing a difficult road schedule early in the season.
At the beginning of the season, the Spiders competed in three regular-season tournaments against fierce competition, taking on four ranked opponents. The tournaments mentioned were the: JMU/Comfort Inn (JMU and New Hampshire), Tennessee Invitational (#7 Tennessee and #21 Denver), and Duke adidas Classic (#18 Duke and #1 North Carolina). In addition the Spiders played 22-ranked VCU and #20 Virginia during the season.
The Spiders posted two four-game win streaks in their 11-9-2 overall record. During regular A-10 play, Richmond compiled a 7-3-1 mark and earned their third consecutive berth in the Atlantic 10 Championships, in as many years. The squad climbed to the top of the conference standings late in the season and entered the A-10 Championship Tournament as the #3 seed. In the tournament, the Spiders defeated #5 Rhode Island 2-1 in double overtime, and then upset #2 Fordham, 1-0. Richmond met Dayton in the championship game but fell 3-0 to the Flyers.
