Men's Basketball Opens With Win, 79-67

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Mike Skrocki nailed four-of-seven from three-point range on his way to a game-high 21 to lead Richmond in their 2003-04 exhibition opener, 79-67, against the GT Express tonight at the Robins Center.
In addition to his three-point arsenal, Skrocki added a game-high six assists and four rebounds. Junior Jamaal Scott recorded the game's only double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Tony Dobbins (12) and sophomore Kevin Steenberge (12) also scored in double figures.
Midway through the first half, Richmond scored on six straight possession, four of those from three, to increase its lead from three to 17 (36-19) at the 7:02 mark. Two more buckets, highlighted by a dunk from Dobbins, gave the Spiders their biggest lead of the game, 21 points (40-19), at the six-minute mark.
GT Express, a group based in Toronto, Ontario, opened the second half with a 13-6 run to close the Spider lead to 52-43 with 14:14 to play. Richmond remained composed and held a double-digit lead for a majority of the final 10 minutes.
As a team, the Spiders shot 41.2 percent from behind the arc (7-of-17) and out-rebounded the visitors 51-40. GT Express shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) for the game, including 4-of-23 (17.4 percent) from behind the arc.
Richmond returns to the court at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11 when they host Coaches vs. Cancer in the final exhibition game. The Spiders open the 2003-04 campaign at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17 against Mississippi Valley State in the opening game of the Guardians Classic.
