GAME NOTES
The Century Mark ... A familiar foe greets Jim Reid when he takes the field for the 100th time as Richmond head coach ... On Saturday, the Spiders are in Amherst to face Massachusetts, a program where Reid served as head coach for six seasons (1986-91) ... After 99 games at Richmond, Reid is 48-50-1 (.490) and has earned two Atlantic 10 Championships -- 1998 and 2000.
Scoring First Is Important ... During head coach Jim Reid nine-year tenure, the Spiders are 31-15 (.674) when scoring first ... The Spiders have not scored first in any of the eight games so far this fall ... Records from Reid's eight previous seasons when the Spiders score first: 2002 (4-1), 2001 (5-1), 2000 (3-4), 1999 (4-2), 1998 (8-1), 1997 (4-1), 1996 (1-4), 1995 (2-1).
Two Weeks In Massachusetts ...For the first time since the 1996 season, Richmond plays consecutive road games in Massachusetts ... The Spiders travel to Amherst for a Nov. 8 date with UMass, before returning for a Nov. 15 game in Boston against Northeastern ... In 1996, Richmond won 37-7 at Boston University on Sept. 28, before returning for a 27-10 loss at Northeastern on Oct. 5.
Consecutive Road Games In Same State ... The UMass/Northeastern swing marks the fourth-time in program history that Richmond traveled to another state for a road game in consecutive weeks ... The most recent time this occurred was in 1976 when the Spiders lost to The Citadel, 20-13, on Oct. 16, before winning at Furman, 13-9, on Oct. 23 ... The other three occasions came against North Carolina teams in 1906, 1909 and 1964.
Thrown Into Top-10 ... With his 207-yard performance against Villanova (Nov. 1), senior Bryson Spinner moved into Richmond's single-season top-10 for passing yardage .. Spinner has thrown for 1,712 yards after eight games, knocking Steve Krainock's 1980 performance (1,653 yards) from the chart ... Spinner is 71 yards from Charlie Richards' ninth-place performance in 1970 (1,783) and 238 from Greg Lilly's 1991 effort (1,950) that is eighth ... Lilly holds the all-time, single-season record with 2,704 passing yards in 1992.
Top-10 In Two More ... Spinner alsos rank in two other single-season top-10's ... The senior QB is already ninth in completions with 135 and tied for 10th with 10 touchdown passes ... Bob Bleir holds the program mark for completions in a season (195 in 1986), while Charlie Richards (1969) and Buster O'Brien (1968) are tied atop the single-season touchdowns thrown list with 21.
While We're At It ... Another single-season chart that Bryson Spinner reached is total plays ... After eight games, Spinner has thrown 250 times and run 75 more ... His 325 total plays ranks 11th all-time and is two shy of Bob Bleier's 1985 performance (301 pass-26 rush) which is 10th ... Jimmie Miles holds the program record with 475 total plays in 1999 (289 pass, 186 rush).
