RICHMOND, Va. — Spider Athletics will welcome fans back to an upgraded Robins Stadium this fall following a comprehensive resurfacing of V. Earl Dickinson Field, the facility's playing surface, this summer. The project marks the latest investment in one of the premier athletics venues in the nation and underscores Richmond's consistent dedication to enhancing the student-athlete and fan experience.
"This project reflects our ongoing commitment to providing Spider student-athletes with the resources and facilities they need to thrive," said Vice President and Director of Athletics John P. Hardt. "It will enhance the everyday experience for more than 150 Spider student-athletes by delivering a high-performance, consistent playing surface. Top-tier facilities are essential to sustaining championship-level success and ensuring Richmond remains a destination for outstanding scholar-athletes, and we are grateful for the continued support that allows us to invest in the future of Spider Athletics."
Work on the project began in early June and will be completed prior to the start of Spider football's 2026 training camp.
The project will include the installation of a new, state-of-the-art FieldTurf surface across the stadium's multi-purpose competition field, which hosts Spider football, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, the annual track & field Fred Hardy Invitational, and a variety of campus and championship events throughout the year. The updated surface will continue to feature Richmond's signature branding and multi-sport field configurations while providing enhanced performance, durability, and consistency for competition.
This is the first upgrade to V. Earl Dickinson Field since 2019, when UR installed new turf and completely replaced the Fred Hardy Track surrounding the field with a modernized surface and updated color scheme.
The effort continues a series of enhancements made to the facility in recent years. Prior to the 2021 season, the stadium received a new LED videoboard measuring 60 feet wide and nearly 28 feet tall, while the facility's sound system was fully replaced ahead of the 2022 season. In 2023, the second level of the west concourse underwent a complete renovation to create premium club seating and hospitality spaces for fans. Taken together, these upgrades serve to ensure that Robins Stadium continues to provide a first-class championship environment for Spider student-athletes, fans, and the Richmond community for years to come.
Named in honor of E. Claiborne Robins and the Robins family's longstanding support of the University, Robins Stadium has consistently been recognized among the nation's top athletics facilities for football, men's and women's lacrosse, and track & field. Richmond ranked seventh nationally for "Best Athletic Facilities" in Princeton Review's 2026 "The Best 391 Colleges" Guide.
