UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Meghan Ogilive (Springfield, Va.) scored the game-winning goal to lead the University of Richmond women's soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime victory over Rhode Island in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship this evening at UR Stadium. Richmond, who will face #2 Fordham tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., improves to 10-8-2, while the Rams end their season with an 8-9-2 record.
The Rams held a 1-0 halftime advantage after A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Melanie Kasparek tallied a goal at the 36:48 point.
Richmond knotted the game at 1-1 when junior Olina Vidarsdottir (Grindavik, Iceland) knocked the rebound from teammate Molly Rettig's (Hummelstown, Pa.) shot past the Ram goalie midway through the second half. The Spider outshot Rhode Island 12-2 in the second period but were unable to convert on any of their attempts.
"I am very proud of the way we stayed in the game," head coach Peter Albright said. "I thought we were very courageous. We continue to create so many good chances, yet find a way not to put it in."
Ogilive scored the game-winner, her first goal of the season, in 102nd minute off a free kick from Edda Gardarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland)
"The game-winning goal started with a free kick from Edda [Gardarsdottir]. She sent a beautiful ball to the back post where Megan [Ogilvie] was our target. She got it in traffic and stuffed it home."
The Spiders outshot the Rams 22-8 and recorded eight corner kicks while Rhode Island did not attempt any.
The third-seeded Spiders will face #2 Fordham at 7:30 tomorrow evening at UR Stadium.
