RICHMOND, Va. - Top-seeded Dayton blanked No. 3-seed Richmond 3-0 to capture the 2003 Atlantic 10 Tournament championship this afternoon at UR Stadium. The Spiders competed in the A-10 final for the third consecutive season; falling to 11-9-2 with the loss.
In a rematch of the 2001 A-10 final, the Flyers raced out to a 2-0 lead on first-half goals from freshman Jamie Yates and junior Tesia Kozlowski. At 20:34, Kozlowski, who had four points in the tournament, fed Yates who placed a shot behind Spider senior goalkeeper Megan Cox.
With just 56 seconds remaining in the first half, Kozlowski lifted a perfect shot that ricocheted off the cross bar and into the corner to give the Flyers a two-goal advantage. At the 54:38 mark, Kuhl, the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after scoring two goals in Dayton's two games, capped the scoring with a header off an arcing cross from sophomore Katie Lowstuter.
Freshman Sarah West, one of six Flyers on the All-Championship team, made four saves to record her fourth shutout of the season. Richmond's Cox had two saves in defeat while sophomore Kelly Kolker recorded one and senior Samantha Honig added three for the Spiders.
Today's victory gives Dayton its fourth A-10 women's soccer title. It was Richmond's third consecutive year in the A-10 final, winning the championship in 2002.
