UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond men's basketball head coach Jerry Wainwright announced today that Stacy Tutt, a sophomore quarterback on the Spider football team, has joined the men's basketball program.
"I am extremely excited that Stacy has joined our basketball team for the remainder of the 2003-04 season and I would like to personally thank Jim Reid [football head coach] for helping this happen," said Wainwright, in his second year at the Spider helm. "Stacy is a tremendous competitor, a born leader and an exceptional person and those are all qualities that can only make our team better."
A native of Tappahannock, Va., Tutt has begun practicing with the team and is scheduled to make his first road trip this Saturday when the Spiders face Manhattan at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in New York City's Madison Square Garden. The 6'2", 215-pound guard is an exceptional athlete who earned All-District in three sports at Essex High School before starring at quarterback for Fork Union in 2000.
During his first two seasons on the college gridiron, Tutt started four games under center and eight games at wide receiver. After spending most of his redshirt freshman season as a back up, Tutt celebrated his first collegiate start with four touchdowns (two passing and two rushing) in a 35-13 win against William & Mary (Nov. 23, 2002).
This past fall, Tutt started the first eight games at wide receiver, finishing third on the squad with 40 receptions and 493 receiving yards, before taking over the offensive helm. In the final three games, Tutt threw for 535 yards, including a career-high 226 and two touchdowns against the Tribe (Nov. 22, 2003).
Tutt, who will wear No. 34, joins a Spider team that defeated South Florida, 70-58, on Saturday night to improve to 5-3 this winter. Following Saturday's game against Manhattan, Richmond returns home to host Providence (Dec. 23) and Hampton (Dec. 29) before the New Year.
