Daon Merritt Earns Atlantic 10 Rookie Of The Week

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond point guard Daon Merritt earned his first Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor for his outstanding performance in two games this week, it was announced today by the conference office.
The Jamaica, N.Y. native averaged 12.5 points and 4.0 assists in a 70-52 win against VCU (Dec. 3) and an 81-66 loss at Wake Forest (Dec. 6). Merritt, who has started six of his first seven collegiate games, is averaging 5.0 assists in the past four games.
Playing his first game against the Spiders' cross-town rival, Merritt slashed and penetrated for 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, 6-of-7 from the free throw line against VCU. He tied with senior Mike Skrocki for a team-high with four assists.
On Saturday, Merritt scored 11 points and led the team with four assists against #16 Wake Forest. He also added three rebounds against the Demon Deacons.
After seven games this winter, the 5-9 guard ranks third on the team with 7.6 points per game. He leads the Spiders with 28 assists (4.0 per game) and is averaging 25.7 minutes per game.
Richmond (4-3) returns to action at 8 p.m. on Saturday against South Florida in Tampa.
