Ashley Bell Continues her Record-Setting Pace

FAIRFAX, Va. - Continuing her explosive sophomore season, Ashley Bell (Glen Allen, Va.) set two more Richmond records at the GMU Collegiate Open. Bell added her name to the 55-meter dash and hurdles.
The Richmond native first broke the 55-meter hurdles record in the preliminaries by taking third with a time of 8.37. She then went on to better the time in the finals with 8.36, rewriting her previous record of 8.39 set in 2002. In the 55-meter dash, Bell shattered the previous record of 7.49 set in 1999 by Christiana Andem with a time of 7.36 for a tenth place finish.
Senior Ruth Chege (Brooklyn, N.Y.) garnered the lone first place finish for the Spiders in the 1000-meter run with a finish of 2:52.95. Freshman Diana Morse (Harvard, Mass.) and junior Amy Hahn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also competed in the 1000-meter to finish with times of 3:02.80 and 3:13.38, respectively.
On the men's side, senior Pete Jennings (Fort Washington, Pa.) placed third in the 800-meter (1:57.39). Junior Ian Woie (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and senior Brett Walton (Bridgewater, Va.) ran the 500-meter in 1:11.12 and tossed the shot put for 32'10.25".
Other notables on the women's side include sophomore Jennifer Coles' (Gretna, Va.) record-setting 7.46 55-meter dash and 27.70 200-meter run. Coles broke the record prior to Bell's run in the 55-meter dash. Junior Julee Wilson (Chester Springs, Pa.) leaped 18'11.75" in the long jump, along with competing in the 55-meter dash (7.51). Sophomore Erin Bagley (Wallingford, Pa.) ran a 1:02.00 in the 400-meter. In the mile, senior Anne Rettig (Charlottesville, Va.) led Richmond with a fifth place 5:11.84 finish. Classmates Lauren Manero (Wilton, Conn.) and Sarah Taylor (Orono, Maine) followed in sixth (5:11.91) and seventh (5:13.92), respectively. Freshman Danielle Eaton (Malvern, Pa.) and senior Sarah Stuber (Prosper, Texas) grabbed the third (1:17.38) and seventh (1:18.50) placings in the 500-meter run. Competing in the 800-meter run, senior Bridget Keenan (Newport News, Va.) earned the top Spider spot at seventh with a 2:20.01 time. Senior Erin Brandt (Fanwood, N.J.) and freshman Amy Thesing (Columbia, S.C.) followed in the ninth (2:21.22) and 11th (2:22.36) spots. Sophomore Emily Ward (Woodbury, N.J.), along with seniors Katie Sloan (Severna Park, Md.), and Marybeth Redheffer (Medford Lakes, N.J.) finished out the individual running events with third (10:35.36), seventh (10:44.54), and ninth (10:52.68) finishes in the 3000-meter race.
In the field events, senior Cathleen Campbell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) placed third in the high jump with 5'3". Teammate freshman Kaitlyn Ryan (Garden City, N.Y.) recorded the same height for a sixth place finish in the high jump as well. Freshman Cathly McLane (New Paltz, N.Y.) notched her highest pole vault of the season, sailing to 9'6.25". In the throws, senior Rachel Shrewsbury (Dearborn, Mich.) earned a sixth in the shot put (42'6.75"),while teammate junior Diane Schreiber (Johnsonburg, Pa.) placed ninth in the shot (38'0.75") and sixth in the weight throw (45'10"). Sophomore Karianne Butt (Brookfield, Conn.) threw for 42'7" in the weight throw to follow two spots behind Schreiber.
Richmond track and field returns to action at the Indoor Track and Field Atlantic 10 Championships next Saturday, February 22 at Rhode Island.
