NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sophomore Rashad Smith (Philadelphia, Pa.) breaks the 60-meter record in the preliminaries with a time of 6.93. The women's distance medley team left their mark at Christopher Newport Track and Field Freeman Center by setting a new facility record.
Smith shattered the first men's indoor record of the season in the preliminary round of the 60-meter dash taking first. In the finals, the defensive back and sprinter finished third with a time of 6.99. Smith also finished fourth in the 400-meter (23.02). Teammate sophomore David Freeman (Fayetteville, N.C.) took sixth in the 200-meter (23.09) and ran a 7.27 60-meter dash. Senior Pete Jennings (Fort Washington, Pa.) ran a 3:59.83 1500-meter for third. Teammates junior Joe Mallory (Montpelier, Va.) placed 13th in the triple with 20'09.50" and fifth in the long with 45'11".
The women's distance medley team of senior Erin Brandt (Fanwood, N.J.), senior Ruth Chege (Brooklyn, N.Y.), freshman Danielle Eaton (Malvern, Pa.), and senior Bridget Keenan (Newport News, Va.) broke the previous record of 12:04.89 by the College of William and Mary with a time of 12:01.99. Freshman Erin Clapp (Guilderland, N.Y.) tied her previous record of 10'0" in the pole vault for the second time this season.
Other notables on the women's side include sophomore Ashley Bell's (Glen Allen, Va.) first place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (9.22/9.05 preliminaries). Bell also tallied a fifth in the 200-meter (26.21), 13th in the triple jump (37'07.25"), and ninth in the long jump (17'09.50"). Senior Rachel Shrewsbury (Dearborn, Mich.) landed first in the shot put with a toss of 42'07.75" and ninth in the weight throw with 38'10". Teammate junior Diane Schreiber (Johnsonburg, Pa.) took third in the shot put (41'02") and first in the weight throw (47'04"). Sophomore Karianne Butt (Brookfield, Conn.) followed Schreiber in the weight throw with 44'08.50". Junior Julee Wilson (Chester Springs, Pa.) earned fourth in the 400-meter dash (58.94), fifth in the long jump (18'01"), and12th in the 60-meter dash (8.07). Other notables include Brandt's fifth place finish in the 800-meter (2:24.18), freshman Amy Thesing's (Columbia, S.C.) seventh place 800-meter (2:25.58), junior Amy Hahn's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) eighth place 800-meter (2:25.60), freshman Diana Morse's (Harvard, Mass.) ninth place 800-meter (2:26.18), senior Lauren Manero's (Wilton, Conn.) second 1500-meter (4:49.90), freshman Erin Kubarewicz's (Bloomfield, N.J.) ninth 1500-meter (5:07.33), senior Sarah Taylor's (Orono, Maine) second 3000-meter (10:25.67), junior Alison Belicose's (Red Bank, N.J.) fourth 1500-meter (10:28.19), sophomore Emily Ward's (Woodbury, N.J.) second 5000-meter (18:38.39), senior Katie Sloan's (Severna Park, Md.) third 5000-meter (18:44.58), freshman Kaitlyn Ryan's (Garden City, N.Y.) fourth place high jump (5'04"), and senior Cathleen Campbell's (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) fifth place high jump (5'04") and tenth in the shot put (33'04.50").
