UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The inaugural season of Richmond women's golf is nearing its completion. There is one things left to accomplish, become the first champion of CAA Women's Golf.
First-year head coach LaRee Pearl Sugg entered all eight events of this inaugural season with an inexperienced, competitive roster, featuring five freshmen and one sophomore. Growing pains were common, but the Spiders improved as the rounds wore on.
"Our goal for this week is to shoot three solid rounds," Sugg said. "This has worked very hard and is committed to their goals.
Freshman Lauren Ritter enters this weekend's event with the Spiders' lowest scoring average (84.6) and is playing the best golf of her collegiate career. The Watchung, N.J. native carded a three-round 247 at last week's JMU/Bonnie Hoover Invitational, the lowest three-round score by a Spider this season.
Classmate Whitney McComis is also playing well heading into this championship. A native of Bridgeport, Texas, McComis tied for first in a dual event the Spiders held with Hampton University on April 5-6. McComis has compiled an 86.6 scoring average, second best on the team, in 21 rounds this year.
The first-ever CAA women's golf championship will take place at Salisbury Country Club from April 20-22. The Spiders will be one of six teams vying for the title. Xavier, Dayton, William & Mary, James Madison and Hofstra will also compete.
