No. 17 Baseball Completes Sweep of La Salle

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Richmond completed the Atlantic 10 series sweep of La Salle in today's doubleheader, 9-5 and 12-1. Shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md.) led the Spiders with a 5-for-8 day at the plate. Richmond improved to 31-7, 12-2 Atlantic 10, while La Salle falls to 7-21, 5-9 A-10.
In the early game, La Salle posted the first run on the scoreboard in the first frame. Catcher Brian Oakes hit a double to score Ryan Parfitt. Richmond answered in the top of the second with a two-run homer. After senior Michael Galligan (Woodbury, N.Y.) walked, designated hitter Chris Dolan (Holmdel, N.J.) ripped his first home run of the year over the left field fence for a 2-1 lead.
The Explorers added two more runs on a home run by Scott Gehringer. The Spiders responded, knotting the game in the top of the third frame with a solo homer by Reaver, his first of the year. After Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) walked and stole second in the fourth, centerfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill.) launched the third Spider home run over the left field fence. Reaver added the sixth run on a Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) single up the middle to take a 6-3 lead.
La Salle continued to fight back, tacking on two more runs in the fourth. Richmond responded with a run in the top of the fifth. Senior Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J.) led off with a single to left field and scored on Dolan's sacrifice fly to right field. In the sixth, the Spiders added two more runs for a 9-5 lead. Zeskind and Jim Fasano (Horsham, Pa.) walked to load the bases. Reaver then touched home on a Chiaravalloti sacrifice fly. Zeskind added the ninth run and final run of the first game, crossing home on a wild pitch by Explorer pitcher Eric Ruhland.
In the second game, Richmond took a 1-0 lead before La Salle responded with its only run in the bottom of the frame. Spiders' first baseman, Fasano, scored Reaver. La Salle then tallied its lone run off of a double by Brian Oakes. Richmond continued to score with Galligan belting a double down the left field line, which sent Dolan home in the second frame. Galligan then crossed the plate on a LeNoir fielder's choice for a 3-1 lead.
The Spiders exploded in the fourth, knocking three singles, a triple, and a home run. Dolan led off the inning with a single to right field. Galligan laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Dolan to second. Catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md.) stroked a single to send Galligan home. With Tidball on first, LeNoir ripped a triple into right center, which scored the Spiders' catcher. Pritz then stepped up to the plate, belting a two-run homer to take a 7-1 lead.
In the fifth, Fasano launched a monster double to the centerfield fence but never made it across the plate. Richmond added three more runs in the sixth frame for a 10-1 advantage. LeNoir hit a right field line single, stole second, and then touched home on a Reaver double. Reaver then scored on a Fasano single to right field and Zeskind touched home on a Chiaravalloti single.
Spiders' third baseman, LeNoir added the final two runs of the afternoon with his first homer of the season over the left field fence.
Sophomore righty Jason Bolinski (Hockessin, Del.) struck out five in 6.0 innings, improving to 6-0 in the first game of the doubleheader. Senior righty Mike McGirr (Lexington, Mass.) earned the win in the second game. McGirr (5-1) fanned five in 6.0 innings. The relief trio of Andy Givens (Bel Air, Md.), Tim Rice (Brookfield, Conn.), and Joe Larkin (Media, Pa.) finished out the final 3.0 innings striking out three and allowing three hits. La Salle's Bryan Harvey (3-4) and Chris Hughes (0-4) took the losses for the Explorers.
Richmond takes a week off for exams before returning to action at Pitt Field next weekend, April 26 for a Noon doubleheader against Xavier.
