Two Spiders Earn Atlantic 10 All-Academic Honors

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond swimmer Elizabeth Cook earned Atlantic 10 Swimming Student-Athlete of the Year it was announced today by the conference office. Cook is the second Spider to earn such an accolade this season, as senior Jeff Myers was distinguished as the Men's Basketball honoree in March.
Joining Cook on the A-10 All-Academic Team was junior Casey Dluhos. Senior Pete Jennings and sophomore Brett Walton were chosen for the Men's Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Team today.
Cook, a senior from Rockville, Va., is the second consecutive Richmond swimmer to earn Student-Athlete of the Year, as Kristin Newkirk earned the award last spring. A biology major with a 3.63 GPA, Cook holds the program record in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.72). She set that mark and won the event at the 2002 Atlantic 10 Championships. Cook is also a member of the school and conference record-setting 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley and the Richmond-record 800-yard freestyle relay teams.
Cook's teammate, Dluhos, was also a First Team All-Conference member. A junior from Savannah, Ga., Dluhos carries a 3.38 GPA and majors in English. She was a member of the A-10 champion 400-yard medley and 800-yard free relays. Individually, she finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (57.85).
An All-Conference selection in Indoor Track & Field, Jennings added to his achievements with the All-Academic award. A senior from Fort Washington, Pa., Jennings finished second in the 1,000 meters at the conference meet with a time of 2:27.86. He is majoring in journalism and carries a 3.37 GPA.
Walton, a rhetoric and communications studies major with a 3.43 GPA, competes in the high jump during the indoor season and the decathlon during the outdoor season. A Bridgewater, Va. native, Walton set personal bests in the high jump (6'3.25") and shot put (32'11.75") at the 2002 Atlantic 10 Championships.
These four All-Academic honorees increase Richmond's season total to 15 in 11 sports. The Atlantic 10 All-Academic teams still to be announced are: baseball, men's golf, lacrosse, men's and women's outdoor track & field and men's and women's tennis.
