UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - A second-place finish in the Atlantic 10 Championships, a seven-match winning streak and a victory over a nationally-ranked opponent were among the highlights of the 2003 University of Richmond men's tennis season. The Spiders finished 15-11, 3-1 in conference action after playing a challenging schedule that included seven nationally-ranked squads.
Richmond advanced to the title match of the Atlantic 10 Championships, for the second consecutive year, before falling to St. Bonaventure 4-2. In first round action, the Spiders shut out Temple 4-0 and defeated Duquesne 4-1 in the semi-finals.
The University of Richmond would like to thank seniors John Oxley (Huntington, W.V.) and Dan Scrafford (Centreville, Va.) for their four years of hard work and dedication. The two helped the Spiders to 50 wins throughout their four years and the 2002 Atlantic 10 Championship.
John Oxley played in 11 dual matches for the Spiders before sitting out his senior year due to injury. As a freshman and sophomore he posted a 3-3 record at #6 singles and played at both #1 and #3 doubles. Last season, Oxley participated in six contests and paired with David Donn (East Longmeadow, Mass.) to record a 1-0 mark at the #3 doubles slot.
Dan Scrafford appeared in over 75 matches for the Spiders, playing at four different singles positions for Richmond this season. He recorded eight wins at the #5 singles slot and also played at the #1, 2 and 4 spots. Scrafford teamed with Matt Cabana (Plantation, Fla.) to compile an 8-2 mark in doubles action, going 6-2 at the #3 position.
