Baseball Explodes for 17 Hits against George Washington to Advance to Final Elimination Game

NORWICH, Conn. - Senior shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md.) ripped a double and triple, going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, to lead the Spiders to a 8-2 win over George Washington in the eighth game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. With the win Richmond (43-13) advances to the final elimination game of the A-10 Tournament tonight against Xavier at 8:30 p.m. George Washington finished the season 37-18.
The Spiders took a 2-0 lead in the second. Reaver ripped a double into the left centerfield gap. Third baseman David Thomas followed with a single to right field, which scored Reaver. Second baseman Bobby LeNoir stroked a RBI single for the 2-0 Richmond lead.
In the fourth, Richmond added another run. Reaver laced a two-out triple into the right centerfield gap. Catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md.) stroked a RBI single into centerfield for a 3-0 Spider lead.
The Colonials responded with a run in their half of the fourth. Third baseman Ryan Roberson stroked a single, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored a Brad Rosenblat single down the right field line for a 3-1 score.
Richmond added another run in the fifth frame. First baseman Jim Fasano (Horsham, Pa.) knocked a single into shallow right field. Rightfielder Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J.) belted a double down the left field line to score Fasano.
Fasano beat out a bunt to lead off the eighth. Chiaravalloti followed with a single to right field. Leftfielder Michael Galligan (Woodbury, N.Y.) added the third hit, beating out another bunt. Reaver then stroked a two-RBI single into shallow centerfield. Tidball followed, belting a double down the left field line to send Reaver to third. Reaver and Tidball then scored on a LeNoir single into right field, before being caught between first and second to end the inning.
Spider starter Mike McGirr (Lexington, Mass.) improved to 8-1 after 8.0 innings of work. McGirr struck out eight, while allowing eight hits and one run before handing the ball over to senior Andy Givens (Bel Air, Md.). Givens finished the final inning, allowing one hit and one run. Nate Casagrande (3-3) took the loss for the Colonials.
Richmond will face Xavier in the final elimination game tonight at 8:30 p.m. The winner of this game will advance to the Atlantic 10 Championship series next Thursday, May 22 through Saturday, May 24.
