Ruth Chege Highlights First Day At Atlantic 10 Track & Field Championships

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond senior Ruth Chege broke the conference record and won the 10,000 meters (36:57.99) to highlight the first day of competition at the 2003 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Sports Backers Stadium. After day one, the Spider women's team ranks second and the men's team ranks fifth.
Another highlight came from Katie Sloan who set the program record and finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:10.2. Julee Wilson claimed another second-place performance with a leap of 19'01.25" in the long jump. Sherry Sikora finished fifth in the steeplechase with a time of 11:28.14.
Another top-5 finish on the women's side was turned in by Diane Schreiber whose 114'08" throw in the javelin was fifth. Katie Ryan and Cathleen Campbell tied for third after clearing the high jump bar in 5'03". Campbell is currently second after four events in the heptathlon.
On the men's side, Joe Mallory finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 22'04.25" meters. Richmond's other top-5 finish was turned in by Tim Caramore who placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:20.27.
Spiders Clement Johnson and Rashad Smith, who also compete on the football team, qualified for the finals of the 100 meters that will be held tomorrow.
The final day of the Atlantic 10 Championships begin tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:40 p.m.
